Who are said to be soldiers? The
ones who fight against enemies, in the borders, to protect us. Right? Who said,
fighting with a gun is the only way to protect people? Every human being is a
soldier in their lives, in their field. But today, the MEDICAL STAFFS, who are continuously fighting to protect us from
this deadly pandemic, are the real heroes of our society. Today the health
workers, are constantly fighting against COVID-19, making the night and day one.
Neither can we see nor can we feel the presence of this virus being killed but
of course we consider it as a universal enemy - the way the virus has proved
itself to be deadly for humans, within a matter of months. Death toll in some
countries is so high that they are having shortage of coffins to bury the dead.
Humans are in such a confronting situation, where every day hundreds and
thousands of patients are dying, and the doctors are handcuffed, due to limited
medical infrastructure.
Today
the medicos are spending 24x7 hours in the battlefield, i.e., hospitals and
various COVID-19 isolation camps and medical units to curb the spread of this
virus, to protect the people from succumbing to death. Ranging from doctors to
nurses, paramedical staff to ward boys, from
ASHA Health workers to the police,
ambulance drivers to all those sweepers, are working all day long even at the
risk of their own lives just to save ordinary people like us. There are many
instances where all these staff, who haven't been to their homes for weeks and
even for months. Not knowing what the consequence can be, they are working in
the hospitals so that the virus does not take the life of any innocent.
Doctors
and scientists, throughout the world, have unified as a single body in order to
develop a vaccine as soon as possible against this deadly virus. It has been
rightly said by a Spanish doctor Dr. Carla Barber, “This is a war and all the
doctors are fighting with every possible weapon they could”. She joined Madrid
hospital at her own will to fight against the COVID-19 but the saddest part of
the story is that she has been infected by COVID-19 and is now quarantined at
home so as not to infect other coworkers.
The
healthcare workers are not only exposed to this disease but are depressed and
emotionally stressed. One of the doctors from the leading hospital in Mumbai
has said that some of the frontline workers of the COVID-19 war are feeling
exhausted and running out of patience. Not only the seniors and experienced
doctors are fighting this battle but innumerable junior doctors and
inexperienced medical staff have taken this crisis as a serious challenge which
has brought back life and hope to the medical system. Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar,
head of infectious disease and epidemiology at ICMR has said that there are
numerous vaccines which are being developed all over the world and are going
under several phases of human tests. He said that it is for the first time, so
happene
d for any disease that the vaccines are undergoing development, in such
a rapid speed.
American
Physicians of Indian-Origin (AAPI) President Dr Suresh Reddy applauded that
thousands of Indian origin doctors are fighting this battle every day. He
further said that, “every 7th doctor in the US is an Indian and they are at the
frontlines, working as soldiers and fighting the virus". He further said
that common people are getting exhausted, tired of the lockdown but the doctors
and the health workers are the actual one who is really suffering mentally.
They are the one who is seeing the man to die out of COVID-19, they are the one
who is eye-witnessing how the covid-19 patients are suffering.
There
have been many instances where health workers who are saving the lives of
ordinary people have succumbed to death due to COVID-19 infections. Over 150 Italian doctors have died after
being contracted by novel coronavirus and more than thousands have been tested
to be COVID-19 positive. About 548 doctors, nurses, paramedics in India have
been infected with Covid-19. 10,000 doctors in Iran have been infected by
coronavirus infection and this has raised their fear. And with America being the
most infected in the world, about 14,299 health workers have reported positive
towards coronavirus.
To increase the spirits of all
our Covid-19 frontline workers, our hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had
asked every one of us to applaud by clapping our hands. On May 3, the IAF
showered flower petals on the hospitals in Mumbai treating COVID-19 patients in
order to
thank them for engaging them in the fight against COVID-19. Tributes
to the COVID-19 warriors are not a special scene in India, but many other
countries did the same to increase their spirits. Italy went a step ahead,
where those under quarantine not only clapped but also sang arias, football
chants and popular songs, played instruments and waved flags. Doctors who have
engaged themselves to curb COVID-19 are being placed at luxury hotels by the
government for the time being. Many hotels across the world are greeting them
with a huge lot of applause to show their gratitude and respect.
The doctors are the key integrals of the medical
infrastructure. Without them is treatment possible? Never ever. Their
professionalism and their knowledge about medicines are helpful in treating the
symptoms but not the disease. They are working with scientists all around the
world discussing and researching on the vaccine, cure, diagnosis and treatment.
Apart from these they are also the ones, who interact with the patients, and
thus have the highest probability of getting infected. In spite of all these
risks, they follow the oath which they take when entering the profession. And
for these reasons, doctors are compared to God on earth.
Despite all the goodness we showered on the warriors,
there have been many instances where we saw how they were getting harassed by
the citizens. Maybe it would be due to the rumors or human fear that may have
caused this. It all includes the stone pelting at doctors and the cuss words by
the people on them, when the medicos went to actually test whether the area has
any COVID positive patient or not after getting certain reports from the
concerned authorities. These kinds of instances have been seen almost throughout
India. Most of them outraged either due to rumor or under compulsion, be it
anything. These types of disrespect should never be encouraged and the matter
should be investigated in depth.
Here comes Police to the rescue. They are the ones,
who also directly or indirectly the Frontline Warriors. They try to investigate
these matters and also provide protection to the doctors and other medical
staff, while visiting certain areas. During the lockdown, when it was tried to
contain the virus, all sorts of rules were imposed by the Government in order
to stop the spreading of the virus. The most horrifying incident happened until
when Fifty-year-old ASI Harjeet Singh of Punjab was cut hand by some hooligans
for stopping them for violating the lockdown norms. Three other Punjab polices
have been attacked as they asked for curfew passes in vegetable market in
Patiala. Many Police Officers are creating awareness among the citizens, by
webinars and speeches on roads with the help of mics and speakers and certain
roadside acts. These measures taken by the authorities are very helpful for the
public on a larger scale.
Many NGOs, like ASHA workers, and others are also
helping the medical infrastructure of our country for a larger good.
Furthermore, there are many ward boys and ambulance drivers who are available
all the time only to serve the people. Of them many are living their life in
the ambulance and hospital itself because who knows when an emergency occurs,
and always be ready for it. This kind of spirit among humans is really helpful
in increasing the motivation of the public.
As serving people is thought of as godly work in
India, all those who have the mindset of serving people can help. Does that
mean, only doctors, nurses, scientists, ward boys, ambulance drivers and police
are capable of helping? You can also help them, by following all the preventive
measures - maintaining social distancing, washing hands with soap or alcohol
based hand rub frequently, wearing masks, drinking enough water and increasing
immunity by exercise and healthy diet. This doesn’t leave you from being a
superhero in this battle.
We, the common people, the doctors, the nurses, the
medical staff, the scientists, the Police, the NGOs among others are on their
part doing the best they can do against this natural disaster. It is hope and
our belief that acts as the motivation to fight against the “virus enemy”. This
motivation should be kept up and in no way this should be shattered because if
the motivation is destroyed, we cannot win the battle. Thus, let us hope for
the best and thank our FRONTLINE WARRIORS with gratitude because we have belief
in them and they will definitely win this battle.
